What would you do if you weren’t afraid?

I’m posting this video, because it actually made me angry.

How dare anyone make anyone feel like this?! How can these grown accomplished women not be proud of themselves and say so?

I find it unfathomable. But I know that it’s common place. And that makes me angry.

I suppose, I know very few strong women and even those I consider strong may not think so of themselves. I’ve never asked any of the women I know about that sort of thing.

I walk through life with a very different attitude than almost everyone I know. I say what I think, I speak up when I feel the need to. I will lead rather than follow and I will never make apologies for it.

If I want to call myself a writer I will damn well do so. If someone felt the need to treat me inappropriately, I will threaten to beat him with my camera (I’ve done that before and my DSLR is fairly heavy and can double as a weapon, especially when I wield it with enough anger).

If my boss makes a decision I don’t agree with, he will know about it very quickly.

That’s just me, though, and I seem to be an exception rather than the rule. That’s my observation anyway, correct me if I’m wrong.

Women haven’t always been like that or been treated like that. This inequality in favour of men is a fairly modern invention. Modern in terms of our own evolution, mind you.

It’s certainly not the natural order of the world we live in that males are more powerful or more important than females. Often it is the other way around.

Whole societies, ancient maybe but no less valid, were build on the reverence of the female power, body, spirit. Call it what you may.

Gaia is female, the personification of Earth.

What women need to realize is this: it’s men who are afraid. At some point they’ve become so afraid of everything female that they wrote about the abomination that is us in their holy books and somehow it became “law”.

Original sin was blamed on Eve. Not on the snake, who enticed her and not on Adam, who ate the apple.

The female cycle somehow makes women unclean and untouchable.

And for many, many centuries women were regarded as less intelligent. The fact that most women in most countries still earn less money than men in the same positions speaks volumes.

Well, you know what? We’re not. We’re not less intelligent. We’re not unclean. We’re certainly not untouchable. We have no reason to be afraid of anything, because if we wanted it the world would be ours for the taking.

Every woman out there needs to realize the inherent power that comes with being female and use it.

I don’t want to overpower men. I don’t hate men, not at all. I have many male friends, straight or, mostly, gay. I love my Dad and my brother and there are many men I admire.

But there are just as many women and there’s no reason for them not to be treated equally in absolutely every respect.

None and not in our day and age. There’s never been a reason to begin with.

Fear isn’t a good reason for anything. It’s powerful and it’s proven to be incredibly effective, but it’s not a good reason. It’s in fact the worst excuse ever.

Don’t ask yourself what you would do if you weren’t afraid. Stop being afraid. There’s no reason.

And then go and do all of these things. Cut out the “if”, it’s not needed.

There’s got to be a better motivator than fear.
