Have you ever read something that made something inside you go “Oh…”? A piece of writing that made your heart take a leap and your eyes weep, whether in fear, joy or despair doesn’t even matter?
I’m sure you have. I know I have.
Whatever words caused these reactions, written by whomever, when they plunged into my soul they took a hold strong enough to stay with me until I take my last breath.
Words have power.
I go into bookstores for the simple joy of being surrounded by millions of words. I grab books at random to see what landscapes they might offer me, what dreamscapes perhaps.
I pour books into my starving self to find those magic words that touch me. Sometimes it is only one phrase or half a sentence. Rarely a whole paragraph, more than a page. And every once in a while an entire book, so brilliantly conceived and executed that I want to meet the author just to thank them for making my time so worthwhile.
It’s their magic touch that always has and continuous to inspire me. From them I learn the most about what I want to write, how I want to write. But how they did it remains a mystery. And I suspect it is as much to them.
The most I aim for now, is not to waste your time. I learn something new every day, gaining a better understanding of things I’ve known for a while, but haven’t been able to get right.
Maybe one day, out of nowhere, I’ll make your soul go “oh”. Until then I will keep trying.
